Embrace the Shadow: Building Real Resilience

Resilience is one of those words people love to post about on social media. Pretty quotes. Hashtags. “Just bounce back.”

But let’s tell the truth: real resilience is messy. It’s painful. And it doesn’t mean going back to who you were.

It means becoming someone new. Someone better.

Because the version of you who failed? Who got knocked down? That person wasn’t equipped yet. And that’s okay. Growth is the point.

Post-Traumatic Growth Over Bouncing Back

Real resilience is post-traumatic growth.

Life will knock you down. Business will humble you. Relationships will hurt you.

You don’t get to avoid that.

But you do get to choose what you do next.

Will you ask yourself, “Why me?” and stay stuck?

Or will you ask, “What can I learn? How can I use this?”

Because life’s unfairness isn’t the end. It’s an invitation to grow.

Chosen Suffering: Training for the Hard Things

Here’s something I practice every day: chosen suffering.

I do cold plunges. Yeah, it’s good for inflammation—but honestly? That’s not why I do it.

I do it because it fucking sucks.

I do it to tell my mind: I can do hard things.

Because unchosen suffering is coming whether I want it or not—death, loss, downturns, betrayal.

I want to be ready.

You can’t wait for the perfect time to be strong. You train for it now, by embracing discomfort on your terms.

Leading Through Pain: A Hard Business Decision

Recently, I had to cut salaries at BK Real Estate.

Not for strangers. For family.

People I love.

It wrecked me. I cried. I told myself I was a failure.

But that voice? That was pity. That was fear.

Because real leadership isn’t avoiding hard choices. It’s choosing the hard right over the easy wrong.

It would’ve been easier to avoid the conversation, to let the business crash later.

But I didn’t.

Because nothing about that decision was failure.

It was a pivot.

Resilience doesn’t mean ignoring the pain. It means refusing to waste it.

Radical Ownership and Honest Growth

Resilience requires relentless fucking honesty.

No sugarcoating. No blame. No excuses.

It’s too hard. I’m the only single mom. I’m the only entrepreneur in my family. I’m the only one who thinks this way.

Maybe those are real obstacles.

But maybe they’re also the story keeping you stuck.

You can’t control the world.

You can only control you.

Stop waiting to be saved. Start owning your shit.

Failure Isn’t the End. It’s the Lesson.

Failure isn’t final.

It’s feedback.

It’s your first, second, tenth attempt.

You don’t fail when you fall short.

You fail when you quit trying.

Your dragons don’t get smaller.

You just get better at slaying them.

Like Jung said: The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.

Your shadow side—the part you’re afraid to face—is the path to your best self.

Fireworks and Fear: A Lesson From My Daughter

The other night, I took my daughter to see fireworks.

At first? She was terrified. Hands over her ears. Begging to leave.

The easy thing would’ve been to go home.

But I didn’t want her to learn that fear means you run.

So I got down on her level. I said: Let’s just be curious. Let’s watch from further back. Let’s see what it’s like together.

By the end? She was watching with big eyes, even smiling.

The fireworks didn’t get quieter.

She just got braver.

That’s resilience.

Meeting fear with friendly curiosity.

Asking: I wonder what happens if I stay with this a little longer.

If a child can learn that? So can we.

Because that’s the shadow side. That’s the cave you fear to enter.

And that’s exactly where the treasure is.

Final Reflection

Ask yourself:

Where in your life are you choosing avoidance over curiosity? What fear could you lean into, just enough to see what’s on the other side?

Because knowledge without action is worthless.
